The 1930s
Linen cards and long shadows
◆ · ◆ · ◆
From the curator
Take your time - every card in this room has its own hour.
Depression on one side of the Atlantic, dictators rising on the other, and yet the postcards keep coming. Holiday camps, charabanc trips, seaside boarding houses - cheap pleasures, brightly printed.
The linen card is at its peak. Curteich in Chicago and Valentine in Dundee turn out millions. Cinema posters and postcard art share the same designers.
Cards from the late thirties often carry a strange, cheerful bravery. People write about the weather because everything else is unspeakable.
