The 1980s
Neon, novelty and the last full racks
◆ ▲ ◆ ▲ ◆
From the curator
Take your time - every card in this room has its own hour.
The rack in the newsagent is still full - comic cards, sunset views, cats on holiday, gold-foil greetings. Design magazines call it kitsch. Everyone posts them anyway.
Long-distance direct dialling has arrived, and the phone slowly starts to steal short news from the postcard. What’s left is the joke, the boast, the picture itself.
Handwriting has loosened to the point of illegibility. Nobody minds. The point is that a rectangle of paper made it across the world with a stamp and a smile.
